SAVANNAH, Ga. — In the bustling heart of Savannah’s downtown historic district, at the iconic Ellis Square, a flurry of gunfire resulted in numerous casualties last weekend. Authorities have confirmed the arrest of a suspect connected with the violent incident.
The suspect, identified as 20-year-old William Anthony Mitchell, faces charges that include four counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Police are continuing their investigation, actively searching for several persons of interest related to the case.
Officials reported that during the late hours of Saturday, an altercation between two individuals escalated, leading to gunfire that injured 10 individuals and rattled bystanders, with one person harmed by shattered glass from a vehicle window. Despite the chaos and injuries, there have been no fatalities reported in connection with the shooting.
By Wednesday, all victims had been medically attended to and were subsequently discharged from the local hospital. Mitchell’s apprehension comes amid ongoing legal trouble, as he was already under felony indictment for possession of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute in a separate case. Despite these charges, he had been released on bond just days before his arrest connected to the Ellis Square incident.
In light of this event, the city has seen a disturbing trend of violence, as this catastrophe contributed to a weekend total of five shootings, with an overall count of 14 victims, two of whom succumbed to their injuries.
