HABERSHAM COUNTY, GA – A catastrophic collision between a church van and an SUV on GA 365 at the Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway intersection left multiple members of River Point Community Church injured on Saturday afternoon. The crash occurred as the congregation was concluding its ‘Serve Wknd 2024’ local mission project.
The collision involved a van with nine River Point church members, including two adults and seven teenagers. An SUV struck the van on its passenger side. The impact resulted in injuries to five teens, with one airlifted to Egleston Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Two others were transported to different children’s hospitals in the Atlanta area, while the remaining injured parties were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
River Point Pastor Kevin Mangum reported that the adults were physically unharmed but shaken by the incident. The mission project involved service activities within the Habersham County, and the group was in transit between project sites when the accident took place.
The accident happened around 1:39 p.m. on June 29 and led to the closure of the southbound lanes of GA 365 for several hours as authorities attended to the injured and state troopers conducted an investigation.
