On the evening of August 10th, 2023, a low-speed collision in Atlanta led to the death of 62-year-old Johnny Hollman. The accident occurred when Hollman was returning home and his vehicle was involved in a minor crash with another driver. Both parties called 911, each insisting that the other was responsible for the traffic incident. No injuries were reported at the scene.
After more than an hour, an Atlanta Police Department officer, Kiran Kimbrough, arrived and concluded that Hollman was at fault, issuing him a citation. Hollman hesitated to sign the citation, maintaining that the collision was not his fault. Officer Kimbrough then threatened to arrest Hollman unless he signed the ticket, which pushed Hollman to call a family member.
Despite Hollman’s verbal agreement to sign the ticket, Officer Kimbrough executed a leg sweep maneuver that resulted in Hollman falling to the ground. In the subsequent altercation, Kimbrough used physical force, striking Hollman twice in the back of the head, deployed his Taser twice, and allowed a civilian to exert pressure on Hollman’s head and neck region. Hollman expressed difficulty breathing multiple times throughout the incident.
