Car accidents are often dangerous and frightening. If you were involved in a car accident, you very well may not know where to turn and what to do next. If you were injured, however, seek immediate medical attention. Such injuries can worsen with time, so pay close attention to your physical well-being from the outset of any car accident.
Medical Attention at the Accident Scene
If you were in a car accident, you may feel so overwhelmed that you do not make the best decisions related to your health and safety. That is why you need to allow emergency medical personnel who arrive on the scene to examine you. A car accident can cause you to go into shock, and thus not immediately comprehend how seriously injured you are.
Furthermore, always follow any medical instructions provided, including transportation to an emergency medical facility (if emergency medical personnel deem it necessary). An injury can grow from something that is nearly symptomless into a life-threatening condition that delayed medical attention exacerbates. Accepting medical attention at the scene of the accident is always the safest choice.
The Emergency Room
Whether you are transported to the ER from the scene of the car accident or you go on your own after your injury becomes evident, you will likely receive a thorough examination that includes an evaluation of your vitals, a complete physical exam, and X-rays (as appropriate).
While such visits are effective at identifying and treating serious physical injuries and life-threatening conditions, they are not the best option for identifying and treating the soft-tissue and spinal-disc injuries that are closely associated with car accidents. Typically, accurate diagnosis of these soft-tissue and spinal-disc injuries require more technologically advanced MRIs.
Your Medical Doctor
Many car-accident victims begin injury treatments with their medical doctor—or follow up with their medical doctors after receiving emergency care. Your medical doctor will further diagnose your injuries and create a care plan. In addition, your doctor will refer you for any specialized diagnostic care that you may need. Such referrals often include orthopedic physicians, physical therapists, and chiropractors.
Once referred to a specialist, you will continue the diagnostic and recovery process via their specialized services, which can include surgeries, ongoing physical therapy, and chiropractic care.
The road to recovery after a car accident is not always straightforward, which can make recovering compensation for your car accident claim more complicated. It is, however, important to pursue an accurate diagnosis to help ensure that you receive adequate compensation for your damages.
