In Savannah, Chatham County, authorities are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred last night near a local Home Depot on E. Victory Drive. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting the inquiry at the request of the Savannah Police Department.
The event unfolded when officers tried to stop a vehicle driven by 31-year-old Gregory Eugene Griffin, a suspect linked to a separate homicide under investigation by the Chatham County Police Department. Griffin failed to comply, leading to a police chase that ended with his vehicle crashing. Fleeing on foot, Griffin reportedly exchanged gunfire with pursuing officers after he brandished a firearm. He was shot by the police during the altercation.
Officers at the scene administered medical assistance to Griffin before he was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where his current medical status remains undisclosed. The authorities have appealed to the public for any information regarding the incident and have provided various contact options, including a phone line and an online tip form, as well as a mobile application for those who wish to submit tips anonymously.
The GBI will continue to scrutinize the incident, as is the protocol for any police use of force resulting in gunfire. Upon concluding their independent investigation, the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office is set to undertake further case assessment and decide on any potential prosecution that may follow.
