In a serious incident on Atlanta’s southwest side, an on-duty police officer endured injuries after their patrol car was struck by an SUV that ran a stop sign. The crash, which took place close to midnight Sunday near the intersection of Lakewood Avenue SW and Pecan Drive, left the police cruiser with extensive damage, especially to the front driver’s side. The officer was swiftly transported to Grady Memorial Hospital but is expected to make a full recovery. Additionally, one individual from the SUV was hospitalized for treatment of their injuries.
The crash caused quite a disturbance in the neighborhood as authorities searched for those involved. Subsequently, one person from the SUV has been taken into custody, however, the Atlanta Police have yet to disclose the nature of the impending charges. After the collision, two other passengers from the SUV were reported to have fled the scene on foot, vanishing into the adjacent woods. One of these individuals has since been captured while the search for the other continues.
There is an ongoing investigation into the accident and alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash. The police are considering DUI charges as they continue to piece together the events of the late night. This event highlights the dangers that law enforcement officers can encounter during routine patrols and the unpredictable nature of incidents they face.
